Protesters started a series of fires through the streets of Madrid, and hurled rocks and flares at police, at the end of a 24-hour general strike against spending cuts and tax hikes. Police responded with rubber bullets. More than 135 people were arrested and more than 70 injured in scuffles. Simultaneous protests were held in Portugal, Greece, and various European cities in what European unions called a European Day of Action and Solidarity. (Reuters)
